History Timeline of Japanese History Jomon period: Before 300 BC Early Japanese were hunters, gatherers, and fishermen. Yayoi period: 300 BC –AD 300 Introduction of rice farming and metal working. Many clans rule Japan.

Kofun period: AD 300 – 538 Japan becomes mostly unified under Yamato clan. Tombs are built for dead rulers (kofuns).

Asuka period: AD 538 –710 552 - Buddhism arrives. 604 - Prince Shotoku Constitution written. Emperor claims supreme power over the clans. Nara period: AD 710 – 784 710 - Nara becomes the first permanent capital, modeled after the Chinese capital.

Heian period: AD 794 – 1185 794 - Capital moves to Heian-kyo (Kyoto). 1016 - Fujiwara Michinaga becomes regent. Fujiwara clan controls the emperor. Kamakura period: AD 1192 – 1333 1192- Minamoto Yoritomo becomes first shogun. 1274/1281- Mongols fail to invade Japan (monsoon storm).

Muromachi period: AD 1338-1573 1300s-1400s - Clan wars = “The Daimyo Wars.” 1543- Portuguese traders arrive, introduce firearms/Christianity. 1568-1603-The unification of Japan by the “Great Unifiers” (Oda Nobunaga, Toyotomi Hideyoshi, Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu). Era of peace and stability. Europeans forced to leave. Edo period: AD 1603-1867 1603-The Tokugawa shogunate rules from Edo (Tokyo) 1639-Japan isolates itself from the world. Only the port of Nagasaki open to trade. 1854- U.S. Commodore Matthew Perry forces the Japanese government to open limited trade relations. TOKUGAWA CLAN!

Meiji period: AD 1868-1912 1868 - The Meiji restoration. Meiji means “enlightened rule.” This was an era of modernization along western ways. MATTHEW PERRY

Showa period: AD 1926-1989 1910-1937 - Japan annexes Korea, invades China, controlling Manchuria. 1941-Attack on Pearl Harbor. 1945- Japan surrenders WWII after 2 atomic bombs destroy Hiroshima and Nagasaki. 1946- The emperor loses all political and military power. 1956- Japan joins the United Nations. Japanese surprise attack against Pearl Harbor Atomic Bomb
