Velocity and Acceleration Notes INPUT

Review: What is Speed? Speed is the distance an object travels in a certain amount of time. Ex. The car traveled 65mi/hr.

What is the equation for speed? r (or s) = distance = d time t

What is Velocity?  Velocity = speed + direction.  Ex. The car traveled east at 65 mi/hr. What was the velocity of the car?

When is velocity used?  Weather reports  Airplane location  Freeway reporting

What is the velocity of this object? 1. The high speed train is traveling 88mph from Sacramento to Los Angeles.

What is the velocity of this object? 1. The jet flies at the speed of sound (340m/s) east across the United States.

What is the velocity of this object? 1. The giraffe gallops 37mph to the west.

What are 3 things that change velocity? When the object: 1. Speeds up (increases speed) 2. Slows down (decreases speed) 3. Changes direction

What is the equation for velocity?  Velocity (v) = distance + direction time

CONCLUSION  Write a complete sentence stating what is velocity and how is it different from speed.

1.What is the velocity of a jellyfish that swims 6 meters in 2 minutes west? Velocity Practice Problems Step 1: Circle the data Step 2: Write the equation Step 3: Plug-in the data Step 4: Solve with units and direction v = d/t + direction v = 6m west 2min v = 3m/min west

2. What is the velocity of a gorilla that walks 42 km in 7hours uphill? Velocity Practice Problems Step 1: Circle the data Step 2: Write the equation Step 3: Plug-in the data Step 4: Solve with units and direction v = d/t + direction v = 42km uphill 7hrs v = 6 km/hr uphill

Practice! Your turn to try some velocity problems…

CHANGES IN VELOCITY CHANGES IN VELOCITY Input

Velocity is:  Speed + Direction

The equation for velocity:  V = d/t + direction

What are 3 things that change velocity? When the object: 1. Speeds up (increases speed) 2. Slows down (decreases speed) 3. Changes direction

OUTPUT  Draw a picture of an object labeled with a velocity. Next draw the same object that has changed its velocity in some way and describe in a sentence how the velocity has changed.

What is acceleration?  Acceleration is the rate velocity changes.  Acceleration involves a change in either speed or direction.

What is the equation for acceleration?  Acceleration = speed + direction time To determine the acceleration of an object, you must calculate the change in velocity during each unit of time. So..  Acceleration = final velocity – initial velocity time

When does acceleration occur? When the object: 1. Speeds up (increases speed) 2. Slows down (decreases speed) OR 1. Changes direction

Which of these is acceleration? TThe car traveled west going 65mph. TThe car came to a stop at the stop sign. TThe car drove at a constant speed on the freeway. TThe car was stopped at a stoplight. TThe car sped up to pass another car. TThe car turned left at the stop sign.
