Velocity and Acceleration Notes INPUT
2
Review: What is Speed? Speed is the distance an object travels in a certain amount of time. Ex. The car traveled 65mi/hr.
3
What is the equation for speed? r (or s) = distance = d time t
4
What is Velocity? Velocity = speed + direction. Ex. The car traveled east at 65 mi/hr. What was the velocity of the car?
5
When is velocity used? Weather reports Airplane location Freeway reporting
6
What is the velocity of this object? 1. The high speed train is traveling 88mph from Sacramento to Los Angeles.
7
What is the velocity of this object? 1. The jet flies at the speed of sound (340m/s) east across the United States.
8
What is the velocity of this object? 1. The giraffe gallops 37mph to the west.
9
What are 3 things that change velocity? When the object: 1. Speeds up (increases speed) 2. Slows down (decreases speed) 3. Changes direction
10
What is the equation for velocity? Velocity (v) = distance + direction time
11
CONCLUSION Write a complete sentence stating what is velocity and how is it different from speed.
12
1.What is the velocity of a jellyfish that swims 6 meters in 2 minutes west? Velocity Practice Problems Step 1: Circle the data Step 2: Write the equation Step 3: Plug-in the data Step 4: Solve with units and direction v = d/t + direction v = 6m west 2min v = 3m/min west
13
2. What is the velocity of a gorilla that walks 42 km in 7hours uphill? Velocity Practice Problems Step 1: Circle the data Step 2: Write the equation Step 3: Plug-in the data Step 4: Solve with units and direction v = d/t + direction v = 42km uphill 7hrs v = 6 km/hr uphill
14
Practice! Your turn to try some velocity problems…
15
CHANGES IN VELOCITY CHANGES IN VELOCITY Input
16
Velocity is: Speed + Direction
17
The equation for velocity: V = d/t + direction
18
What are 3 things that change velocity? When the object: 1. Speeds up (increases speed) 2. Slows down (decreases speed) 3. Changes direction
19
OUTPUT Draw a picture of an object labeled with a velocity. Next draw the same object that has changed its velocity in some way and describe in a sentence how the velocity has changed.
20
What is acceleration? Acceleration is the rate velocity changes. Acceleration involves a change in either speed or direction.
21
What is the equation for acceleration? Acceleration = speed + direction time To determine the acceleration of an object, you must calculate the change in velocity during each unit of time. So.. Acceleration = final velocity – initial velocity time
22
When does acceleration occur? When the object: 1. Speeds up (increases speed) 2. Slows down (decreases speed) OR 1. Changes direction
23
Which of these is acceleration? TThe car traveled west going 65mph. TThe car came to a stop at the stop sign. TThe car drove at a constant speed on the freeway. TThe car was stopped at a stoplight. TThe car sped up to pass another car. TThe car turned left at the stop sign.
