Story Problem Initially provide the student with simple, interesting word problems. This helps the student understand that sentences may requests specific math computations. For example… 1. How much are 3 marbles and 4 marbles? 2. What number represents a triple? 3. How many points is a field goal in football? 4. To get a first down in football, how many yards must you gain? 5. How many points are 10 baskets in basketball? Have the student write a number sentence after reading a story problems Mary has 6 comic books. She has read 2 of them. How many books does she have left to read? 6-2 = ______

Table Problem Provide problems that include computing answers from information on a table. An interesting activity that requires computing percentages and decimals from a table is to give the student baseball standing (for football or basketball standing, depending on the season) from the newspaper with only the won/lost record beside each team. Have the students do the following 1. compute the percentage for each team in the American League East and the National League East. 2. place the American and National League teams in order based on their won/lost records. Determine how many teams have record over.500 Determine how many percentage points the team in the American League East with the most looses is behind the team with the most wins
