McGregor Born 1906 Died 1966 Management theorist Educator in physiology and industry management Lecturer at Havard and Sloan Fellows Professor at MIT

McGregor's Motivational Theory Two theories called: 1) The X Theory 2) The Y Theory McGregor's theories guess things about employees through research. The Human Side of Enterprise 1960. Implementations of Maslow, Taylor and Mayo into business.

The Two Theories X Theory Workers don’t like to work or responsibility. Workers have a need to be forced to work and shown how to. Punishment is thought to get workers to make effort. Workers lacked ambition. Singles out managers Y Theory Effort physical and mental is put in. Workers have willpower, are keen, and are committed. Rewards for achieving companies objectives. Responsibility is sought and accepted by the workers. Singles out employees and individuals

Differences of the theories X Theory Managers theory. Lazy workers. Workers must be controlled. Managers behaved like X theory. No ambition within workforce. Y Theory McGregor’s thoughts. Motivated workers. Job Satisfaction. States what work could be like. Want and accept responsibility.

Conclusions of the theories X Theory This theory leads to a strict control of workforce, this leads punishment. Findings come from discussions with managers. McGregor thought that this theory was a consequence of mangers. Y Theory This theory shows workers are motivated by the top of Maslow’s hierarchy. Workers feel that they are achieving things. Management lay out the foundations for this theory. If the management does as it should the workforce will show the results.

McGregor Management practises in America have changed McGregor’s theories work with the principles ‘of management McGregor’s theories brought about a more organised method of management Managers have a new view of employees Modern management is based on McGregor’s thoughts Based on social science research
