Women’s Rights Movement Women’s role – in the house! Begin to challenge that view – women can do everything men can do Seneca Falls Convention – ◦ push for women’s rights and equality ◦ Push for right to vote ◦ Wrote “Declaration of Sentiments” – after Declaration of Independence

Education Reforms Horace Mann – father of education system Push for education for all children Children need an education to be productive members of society Many northern and western states made free public education but still mainly for white boys

Prison Reforms Dorothea Dix in charge Horrors of prison treatment – bound in chains, locked in cages, young children and elderly Horrified by treatment of mentally ill prisoners – special hospitals/jails for mentally ill created Push for justice system for children Outlawed cruel punishments

Slave Reforms Biggest reform movement Push to end slavery – it is morally wrong to own another human Slavery still mainly in the south with plantations Abolitionists – those who want to end slavery – all types of people Go around giving speeches, conventions, publishing papers and pamphlets to encourage ending slavery Most countries have abolished slavery
