AP Biology Discussion Notes Monday 11/30/2015
2
Goals for the Day Be able to describe the stages of the cell cycle (in eukaryotes) Know what we didn’t about Paper Chromatography
3
Question of the Day 11/30 What is a chromosome? What do you know about them? Draw one.
4
Cell Cycle Purpose of the cell cycle to reproduce, repair, & replace cells.
5
Cell Division Before Eukaryotic Cells divide they need to first replicate their control center, so that each new cell has one. In Eukaryotic cells that control center is known as the ____________. I say Eu, you say_______ I say Pro, you say _______
6
Cell Division Before the control center divides it must replicate its most important feature, the _______ which is housed in the nucleus of eukaryotes.
7
3 parts of the cell cycle 1. Interphase – DNA IS COPIED/REPLICATED A. First growth (G 1 ) phase cell grows rapidly and carries out its routine functions. B. Synthesis (S) phase A cell’s DNA is copied C. Second growth (G 2 ) phase prepares for the nucleus to divide. 2. Mitosis the nucleus of a cell is divided into two 3. Cytokinesis the cytoplasm divides
8
Cell Cycle Interphase – where a cell spends the majority of its life (over 90%)
10
Cell Cycle The purpose of cell division is to reproduce,, or cells. Sometimes cells are not controlled by these genes & proteins Uncontrolled growth = Cancer
11
Interphase Interphase – where a cell spends the majority of its life (over 90%) DNA IS COPIED HERE!
12
Replicated Chromosome
14
Cell Cycle Mitosis – can be divided into 5 basic parts Prophase Metaphase Anaphase Telophase –Cytokinesis
15
Prophase Chromosomes become visible Nuclear Membrane disappears
16
Metaphase Chromosomes line up in the middle of the cell Meta = Middle
17
Anaphase Chromatids are pulled apart to opposite ends of the cell – Become individual Chromosomes!
18
Telophase Opposite of prophase – chromosomes start to disappear, nuclear membrane reappears
19
Cytokinesis Dividing of the cytoplasm – each “daughter” cell is identical to the parent cell
20
Remember IPMAT
21
Let’s Practice! RULES of the CHROMOSOMES: –NO squeaking! –NO hitting (anything, each other, them together)! –NO putting them inside your clothes! –NO talking (chromosomes can’t talk silly)! –ALWAYS treat chromosomes and each other with respect!!!
22
Work order for today Chromatography Quiz Corrections Finish Evolution Practice AP Questions Cell Cycle Online Lab– DUE Wednesday!!
