4 Class Rules You must always be on time, prepared, respectful, and ready to work your hardest for the 42 minutes you are in my room. No electronics!!! No exceptions!! I will take them and pass them along to Ms. Bixler. Water only!!! No other drinks, and no food

5 Materials The Language of Literature: American Literature Interactive Reader AR Books…at all times Notebooks and necessary materials for class

6 Course Objectives Become familiar with authors and literary works from the earliest period of American literature to the present. Become familiar with the backgrounds of literary selections from both a historical and cultural perspective. Become independent and critical readers with a high level of comprehension.

7 Objectives Continued Be able to analyze and interpret literature for author’s purpose and use of literary devices. Be able to identify and master different modes of writing, exhibiting high quality finished products. Speak and listen within classroom setting.

8 Objectives Continued Improve vocabulary development through reading and writing. Demonstrate mastery of the mechanics of writing. Be able to use outside sources for research.

9 Grading 100-90 = A 89-80 = B 79-70 = C 69-60 = D Below 60 = …well, you know.

10 Points will come from: Completeness and quality of written work. Tests and quizzes Projects Class participations Group work Accelerated Reader Homework Class Work

11 Formal Papers All papers assigned should be typed. The school provides space on the server for you to use. Papers should follow the style outlined in your planner, with heading including your name, date, class and assignment in the upper left hand corner. All work should be in 12 font, Times or New Roman. All papers should be double spaced.

12 Late Work Work handed in late with no excuse will lose ten percent per day until half he points have been deducted. After a week, a grade of zero will be placed in the grade book, and there will be no changes to that grade after that time! No extensions on assignments due on the last day of the marking period!

13 Absence It is YOUR responsibility to seek and complete any work you miss when you are out. Once you have returned from an absence, the work you missed will be considered late if you do not make it up within the allowed days. You may not turn it in weeks later and say, “Oh…here. I was absent when you guys did this.”

14 Absent Tests and quizzes must be made up the day of your return assuming you were in school the day before the test. If your absence in unexcused, you will not be granted permission to make up that work. This includes classes missed for Ag, student council, yearbook, etc., that you did not receive prior approval for.

15 Academic Dishonesty Academic dishonesty is an intentional act of deception in which a student seeks to claim credit for the work or effort of another person, or used unauthorized material or fabricated information in any academic work.

16 Academic Dishonesty… Cheating: giving or receiving answers on graded material, using materials or aids forbidden by the teacher or any other intentional use or attempted use of unauthorized materials. Plagiarism: submitting someone else’s work, words, or ideas as your own or using material from another source without acknowledgement.

17 Continued… Buying, selling, or using someone else’s papers, homework, test or quizzes. Falsifying records. Assisting anyone who does the above.

18 Continued…!!!!! Anyone caught in one of the above infractions will receive a failing grade on the assignment, and risks failure for the marking period and even the course as determined by the administration and me. Additional discipline also accompanies the infraction.

19 Units of Study Reading, analyzing, and comprehension of literature.

20 Writing Narrative Informational Persuasive Research

21 The Crucible Arthur Miller’s account of the Salem witch trials.

22 Grammar / Mechanics In writing.

23 Research Paper/MLA We will use MLA format to construct multiple research papers, using primary and secondary sources.

24 Edgar Allan Poe Poetry and short stories written by the father of horror.

25 Mark Twain Father of American literature.

26 Civil War Literature

27 WW I / WW II / Vietnam Lit.

28 Poetry

29 Robert Frost/Emily Dickinson

30 PSSA Prep

31 Accelerated Reader 20 points / marking period Pre-approved book Tests taken at my desk Every Friday, as well as random days throughout marking period.
