Collection Consultation: Advice & Tools for Contributing to NSDL NSDL Annual Meeting November 6-8, 2007

Session Goals  Answer NDR API questions  Help new collection builders with collection development strategies  Help existing collection builders  Provided information on metadata  Showcase NSDL Collection System (NCS)

NSDL Collection System (NCS)  Java-based web application for collection management http://dcs.dls.ucar.edu/schemedit Login as a guest

NCS: Technical Highlights  Supports multiple metadata formats (NSDL_DC, OAI_DC)  Cataloging interface is generated from the XML schema that defines the metadata framework  Writes/reads directly to/from the NDR API  Platform independent & web accessible (Java based)  OAI is embedded if would like to use  Secure access for individual users and services

NCS: Collection Builder Highlights  Handles multiple collections simultaneously  Create different workflows for each collection (i.e. specify the status of a metadata record from new to in progress to accessioned)  Provides collection interactions from cataloger to collection manager to administrator  Manage, create, edit, delete, copy, move and search metadata records  Supports NSES educational standards  Controlled vocabularies and cataloging best practices are embedded

NCS and Use by Core Integration  Will replace the Collection Registration System (CRS) by providing management of NSDL collection-level metadata  Suggested resources Recommend a Resource (http://recommend.nsdlib.org/) land directly in the NCS and an XML metadata record is produced.http://recommend.nsdlib.org/

NCS and Use by NSDL Community  Can be used to enhance metadata (e.g. educational standards)  Develop new collections that interact directly with NDR API (no need for OAI)  NSDL-CI can host metadata for collections (good for small collections)  NCS can be installed locally and communicate with NDR

Other Metadata and Collections Info  NSDL_DC metadata framework  Version change from 1.02 to 1.03  Supports new vocabularies  Collection Policy  In packet and on Expert Voices  Provides accessioning/deaccessioning criteria  Metadata Primer Update  To reflect metadata changes and include NDR info  Just started (not available yet)

Metadata Working Group (MWG)  Rachael Bower: bower@scout.wisc.edu  Tim Cornwell: cornwell@cs.cornell.edu  Katy Ginger: ginger@ucar.edu  Marsha Matyas: mmatyas@The-APS.org  Ann Miller: am310@columbia.edu

NSDL Collection Development Team  Tim Cornwell: Cornell-CI (cornwell@cs.cornell.edu )  Katy Ginger: UCAR-CI (ginger@ucar.edu)  Mike Luby: Columbia-CI (ml1047@columbia.edu)  Ann Miller: Columbia-CI (am310@columbia.edu )

Session Options  See demo of NCS  Answer general metadata/collections/OAI questions  Answer general NDR questions  Break into small groups to address individual questions (NDR, metadata, collection building)  Other questions?
