What are the effects? Reading levels go up!
Reading Mastery prepares students to read text up to a first grade level. Corrective Reading: At the end of Level A, students will be reading on a 2nd grade level. At the end of Level B, students will be reading on a 4th grade level. At the end of Level C, students will be reading on a 7th grade level.

For the Future The Corrective Reading Program is being used in the Middle Schools and High Schools, so student reading levels will continue to improve.
8
Survey Opportunity At the end of the year, you will have a survey to complete about how you feel about your child’s reading program and success this school year.

What is Word Study? This program will take the place of Spelling.
No more memorizing Lists for Spelling!!
14
Why Use Word Study? Students will be working on specific sounds or word patterns that are unique to their abilities. Everyone learns to spell in certain stages. Students are all at different stages of spelling development.
15
Stages of Spelling Development
Emergent Spelling Students learn how to make letters, the direction to write on a page Letter Name-Alphabetic Spelling Consonant sounds, short vowel sounds, consonant blends/ digraphs Within-Word Pattern Spelling Long vowel patterns, r-controlled vowels Syllables and Affixes Spelling Adding Endings (-ed, -s, -ing)
16
How does it work? Weekly test on Friday will not come from a list.
Students will not be graded on if a word is spelled correct, but if they have mastered the sounds/patterns for the week, based on where they are in the program. For example, if a student is working on beginning sounds, the only letter he will need to get correct is the first one. It will be unique to your child’s needs!
17
Homework Students will have a “Word Study” notebook beginning next week. Each week, your child will bring home word or picture cards to sort and do activities with. Students will have specific assignments for each night of the week. The notebook will be due on Friday, graded and returned by Monday with new cards.
