Cooperative Visualization of Geoscience Data Problem: Large Collaborative Projects –share, visualize, discuss and interpret data Kaapvaal Seismic Experiment –multi-disciplinary, multi-national experiment –geology, geophysics, geochemistry Solution: Web site for Findings –Upload data, findings to central DB –Participants can view and discuss data –Allow various “views” ( 2D, 3D, 2D overlays, tables, database queries) –Password authentication
2
Cooperative Visualization of Geoscience Data Integrated 3D Model –3D visual model constructed from data –VRML, Java3D or other methods to view –Links btw data and model –Self-organizing model (?) Current Status –Client/Server model –Client side done (except for 3D) –Some aspects of 3D model done in VRML and Open Inventor –Framework for server side
3
Cooperative Visualization of Geoscience Data What needs to be done: –3D model –Server implementation –Database schema and organization –Simple web admin Computer Science content –3D Visualization, –Distributed Systems, Cooperative Work, –Databases, Web Interfaces
4
Cooperative Visualization of Geoscience Data Why should I do this Project? –Interesting, cutting edge work –Diverse fields of development (Vis+DB+Web) –Moderate implementation difficulty but potential for advanced work –Good project specification (parts already implemented) –Facilities of CIGCES –Possible Funding Extra Info –Dennis: http://www.cs.uct.ac.za/~dburford/vis/ –CIGCES web-site: http://www.uct.ac.za/depts/cigces/
