What are we doing today? Read an excerpt from Feed Freewrite about an important person in our life Lesson and activity with pronouns and antecedents
3
Why do we have to do this? Being able to use pronouns and antecedents will allow you to express yourself more clearly Being a clear and expressive writer will be extremely important in college, and later on in life when you have a job!
4
Freewrite Don’t think too much! Write as much as you can, without stopping, for 5 minutes You will not be graded for perfect spelling or punctuation—just write! Prompt: Think about a person who made an impact on your life – for better or for worse. It could be a good friend, a teacher you couldn’t stand, a person you liked, etc. Describe the day you first met them, or your first vivid impression of them. What did they look like? What were they wearing? What did they say? How did they act? What was your first impression of them?

Pronouns and Antecedents Pronouns: The part of speech that substitutes for nouns or noun phrases and designates persons or things asked for, previously specified, or understood from the context. Examples: he, she, it, we, us Antecedent: a word that comes before the pronoun to make it a pronoun proper Basically, if you’re using a pronoun like it, or she, the reader should be able to tell who or what the pronoun is referring to
6
Pronouns in Boy: Tales of Childhood When Anderson uses pronouns like he, she, it, we, and us, readers can tell what he is referring to— because he uses clear antecedents Let’s look at Feed to find the pronouns and antecedents. Do the 2 nd and 3 rd paragraphs with your partner
7
Conclusion Now, use your freewrite from the beginning of class to find any pronouns in your writing and connect them to the antecedent, like we did in the last activity. If there are any vague pronouns, fix them!
