Thermal Analysis of Fire Resistive Joint Design for Architectural Expansion Joints First Progress Report Jason Shaw

Architectural Expansion Joints are Openings Between Concrete Slabs in a Building Engineered into a building to permit movement ▫Thermal loading (i.e., change of season) ▫Wind loading ▫Seismic activity Building codes often require fire resistive systems be installed in these joints to restrict the passage of smoke, heat, and flames It is the goal of this project to develop a thermal model of a fire barrier system

Research Status Obtained two ASME papers discussing thermal models of fire barriers ▫1-D thermal analysis ▫2-D thermal analysis at expansion joint directional change Working to summarize the findings in each paper and the relevance to this project Continuing to search for additional publications

Report Status Drafted the following sections ▫Introduction/Background ▫Literature Review ▫References

Model Status Preliminary COMSOL model developed ▫Basic geometry established ▫Material properties assigned ▫Working through applying the appropriate boundary conditions, including a time dependent fire temperature Preliminary model shown on next slide

Schedule June 22 ▫Complete research ▫Finalize Introduction/Background and Literature Review ▫Finalize COMSOL model geometry ▫Draft Theory/Methodology June 29 ▫Finalize COMSOL model boundary conditions July 8 ▫Finalize Theory/Methodology ▫Debug COMSOL model

Schedule (cont’d) July 15 ▫Document boundary conditions in report ▫Draft Results and Discussion July 22 ▫Draft Conclusion ▫Finalize Results and Discussion July 29 ▫Complete report
