3 Other interesting facts The asymmetry of the front and back and the long roof in the back help a Saltbox house bear a resemblance to a wooden box used to hold salt, giving the style it’s name. They were constructed in New England during the colonial period. It is rumored to have been created as a result of a tax by Queen Anne on houses of more than one story. It was constructed using post-and-beam construction, which involves joining pieces of wood with woodworking joints, instead of nails, which were very expensive at the time.
