1
Acids, Bases, and Salts
2
pH pH – measure of the concentration of H + ions in a solution or how acidic or basic it is. Scale ranges from 0-14 Strong acids and bases – break down almost completely in solutions Weak acids and bases – only partially dissociate in solutions
3
Properties of Acids Acid – substance that releases H + ions into solution. Taste sour Electrolytes (can conduct electricity) Corrosive to metals React with indicators
4
Properties of Bases Base – substance that produces hydroxide ions (OH - ) in solution Feel slippery Bitter taste Strong bases are corrosive React with indicators
5
Indicators Organic compound that changes color in the presence of an acid or base. Ex: Litmus paper
6
Neutralization Chemical reaction between an acid and a base in water solution, which results in formation of a salt and water. Salt – compound formed when negative ions of an acid combine with positive ions from a base.
