Technology What is technology? Technology is… the application of knowledge and skills to make goods or to provide services. includes the tools and machines that people use to make goods or provide services. is therefore both product and process. (think of the pencil example…) * Technology is any product or process that allows humans to extend their natural abilities.

Technology Chapter 13 - Past and Present Skim read chapter 13. Copy and answer each question. (All answers can be found in the chapter.) 1. Define technology. 2. Name the 3 ‘revolutions’ of technology and give three examples (event and year) for each. 3. What is genetic engineering? 4. Are we flying too close to the sun? Explain this metaphor. 5. Is technology a good or bad thing? 6. Where is technology headed? (Make a prediction or give an example of technology of the future.)

Chapter 15 - Technology and Resources Copy questions and record answers in your SST notes. (These are important!! Remember, everything we do we want to connect to Atlantic Canada!) 1. Provide a summary of how technology impacted the Northern Cod fishing industry. (Use the chart provided!) 2. How has technology affected the mining industry? (Use the chart provided!) 3. How has technology affected our forest industry? (Use the chart provided!) Name the 4 harvesting methods. 4. How has technology affected the farming industry? (Use the chart provided!) 5. Define sustainable development. What aspects of society must sustainable development always consider? Answers to chapters 13 and 14 will be reviewed together!! Sustainable Development Sustainable development involves the use of resources to meet our present needs without reducing the ability of future generations (your children…) to meet theirs. What aspects of society must sustainable development consider? Sustainable development must reconcile the competing needs of: 1. The economy 2. The environment 3. The health of society

Technology ‘Thingy’ Your Mission… Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to complete the following technology related ‘thingies’. Should you be captured or held in detention for infinite periods of time, you should remain silent and deny any knowledge of this non-assignment or its directions. (I do not know you!)
