“Ball-play Dance” was a piece of artwork by George Catlin, painted in 1834. It shows a group of Indians playing one of the earliest forms of lacrosse. This is very accurate because lacrosse was first invented by Native American tribes. The painting reflects the 1800’s because there were many Indians still around then. Some immigrants from Europe took an interest in them, like George Catlin for example. Most of his artwork is of Indians. He traveled the US searching and painting Indians. Ball-play Dance

The Star Spangled Banner was written by Francis Scott Key, and is the national anthem of America. After seeing Fort McHenry get bombed by the British Royal Navy ships at the Battle of Fort McHenry in the War of 1812, Francis was inspired to write this song. He wrote it in 1814 as a poem. Later, the poem was set to the tune of “To Anacreon in Heaven” by John Stafford Smith. (Refer to the next block on Edcanvas to see a modern performance of this song) The Star Spangled Banner

“Home in the Woods” is a piece of artwork by Thomas Cole, painted in 1847. It is a picture of a log cabin in the mountains. Clothes outside of the house are hung on a clothes line, and smoke is coming out of a chimney. A man is also fishing in a river. This reflects the 1800’s because it shows the daily life of people and how they did things in that time period. Their technology was not very advanced so they had to turn to using the resources they had. Instead of buying food, they fished an hunted. Instead of using electricity, they used a cloths line to dry articles of clothing. Instead of technology, they warmed themselves and cooked with fire. Home in the Woods

“Swing Low, Sweet Chariot” is a hymn written by Wallis Willis. It was preformed by the Fisk Jubilee Singers of Fisk University, one of the first collages for African Americans. Although the actual date the song was written is unknown, it is guessed it was written sometime before 1862. The Jubilee Singers were a group of African-Americans, who used to be slaves before slavery was outlawed. At first they were treated poorly by those who still thought the color of one’s skin defined who they were. Soon they became famous though. They toured the Underground Railroad path, other parts of the US, and parts of Europe. The song reflects the 1800’s because the story behind it describes how black people were treated then, and how great people helped get rid of some of that discrimination. “The Girl I Left Behind” is a painting from around 1870-1875, by Eastman Johnson. It shows a girl in a dress. The dress has a high neckline and a long bottom. She is wearing a shawl and boots, and is holding a hat. This reflects the 1800’s because it shows how people dressed then. The women were very modest and conservative. They always covered most of their body, but still usually needed clothes where they could work comfortably. The Girl I Left Behind
