3 Wednesday 9/18 – Thursday 9/19 Please complete this packet over the next two days IN CLASS. Submit all work completed each day at the end of the hour. Do NOT take anything home for homework or, upon finding that you’ve submitted nothing, I will assume you did no work in class. All activities herein should be done individually and silently. The entire packet MUST be completed by the end of the hour on Thursday. Late work will not be accepted. SLIDE 1

4 Character Tree Map: Ch. 1-7 (Wednesday) Create a Tree Map with the following characters. 5 Inferences (Wednesday) Use CORNELL NOTES (see sample on next slide) to respond to the following questions. Use textual evidence whenever possible. 1.Identify Key Points in Chapters 5 and 6 that indicate Chris McCandless could or could not return to the “normal” life IF he had wanted to do so. Explain your findings in your “Notes.” 2.Find Key Points regarding McCandless’ return journey to Jan Burres and Bob. Using Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, explain what this journey reveals about McCandless (in your “Notes”). 3.Look at the relationship McCandless had with Ron Franz: What did each person gain from that relationship? 6 Cornell Notes Structure (Wednesday) Key Points: Not just details, but details that are crucial to the story and the question at hand. Notes: Your thoughts, opinions, explanations, warrants, etc. about the Key Points you list. Summary: Summarize all of the information in your chart into one fluent statement (1-3 sentences). Do a separate chart for each question listed above. Key Points and Notes can be bulleted. The summary at the end must be in complete sentences. SLIDE 4

7 Argument Paragraph ( Should start on Wednesday, if not finish.) In Into the Wild, is Krakauer merely journalistically portraying events, or does the language he uses reveal a bias? Write a 6- to 13-sentence paragraph that uses specific text evidence to support your response. SLIDE 5

8 Ch. 7 Free Write (Wednesday or Thursday) What does McCandless’s interaction with Ron Franz do to your impression of McCandless’s character? Why? – Defend your answer with details from the book. SLIDE 6

9 Written Response (Wednesday or Thursday) READ: Alex’s letter to Ron Franz. Using Cornell Notes, list parallels to Transcendentalism (“Key Points”) and explain how they are parallel (“Notes”). SLIDE 7

10 Quick Write (Wednesday or Thursday) Answer in 1 to 3 sentences each. 1.Of Chapters 5-7, which chapter is the most developed? 2.What does the author give us that we needed to learn in order to understand McCandless? SLIDE 8

11 Reading Assignment If you finish your work early on Wednesday and/or Thursday, please read silently. Into the Wild Chapters 8, 9, & 10 annotations, vocabulary list, and epiwhatever charts are due on Tuesday. Or you can read your EOR book. You can also work on Optional Assignments, revisions, studying vocabulary, etc. as long as you remain silent so others can concentrate. SLIDE 9
