I. The Gift That Edifies Vs. 1-5 V. 1 - “Follow after charity, and desire spiritual gifts, but rather that ye may prophesy.” 2

I. The Gift That Edifies Vs. 1-5 The great emphasis on the use of the gifts is edification – of the individual Christian and the whole church Edification = in the N.T. this refers to the promotion of spiritual growth 3

II. Gifts Must Result In Understanding – Vs. 6-12 [9] So likewise ye, except ye utter by the tongue words easy to be understood, how shall it be known what is spoken? 4

II. Gifts Must Result In Understanding – Vs. 6-12 To speak in a tongue is to speak in a sensible language If the hearers cannot understand the language then no teaching takes place – the hearers are not edified – there is no spiritual growth 5

III. With The Spirit & With The Understanding – Vs. 13-19 V. 15 - What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also. 6

IV. Proper Understanding Vs. 20-25 V. 22 - Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not: but prophesying serveth not for them that believe not, but for them which believe. 8

IV. Proper Understanding Vs. 20-25 Sign to unbelievers = the hearer knew the speaker did not know the language he was speaking and would realize he was speaking by the power of God 9

IV. Proper Understanding Vs. 20-25 Prophesying = was profitable to the believer Tongues would get the attention of the lost (v. 22) and prophesying would provide teaching & instruction (vs. 24- 25) 10

V. Order In Worship Vs. 26-35 V. 26 - Let all things be done unto edifying. 11

V. Order In Worship Vs. 26-35 V. 34 - Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience, as also saith the law. 12

V. Order In Worship Vs. 26-35 V. 35 - And if they will learn any thing, let them ask their husbands at home: for it is a shame for women to speak in the church. 13

V. Order In Worship Vs. 26-35 Do all things in an orderly manner (vs. 26-33) Women are not permitted to speak when the church comes together in one place 1 Tim. 2:8-15 14

V. Order In Worship Vs. 26-35 When the church comes together with all present – including men: Women cannot lead prayer, teach/preach (v. 34) They are not to address the assembly 15

VI. Decently And In Order Vs. 36-40 Vs. 39-40 - Wherefore, brethren, covet to prophesy, and forbid not to speak with tongues. Let all things be done decently and in order. 17
