1
CONSERVATION OF NATURAL RESOURCES Students will be able to explain how a resource can be conserved or persevered.
2
Renewability Whether or not a resource can be restored after it has been used. Renewable Nonrenewable
3
Renewable Resources Resource may renew itself and be used again, but renewing may take a long time Air Soil Wildlife Plants Water
4
Nonrenewable Resources Can not be replaced when used. With careful management, some can be reused. Minerals (Gold, Silver) Fossil Fuels (Oil and Coal)
5
How to Save Resources
6
Conservation Using resources wisely. Resources are not abused, wasted or destroyed. “Wise” is using a resource in ways that do not diminish its value and assure that supplies will be available for future generations.
7
Preservation Maintaining a natural resource without using it up. Resource is protected. Set aside for future use. People can view the resource, but cannot harvest, mine or otherwise take it. Wildlife Preserves and Refuges Old Growth Forests protected from cutting
8
Types of Conservations for Natural Resources
9
Conservation Types Soil Became a vocation after the Great Depression and Dust Bowl era (1930’s) Solutions: shelter belts break up wind, leave wheat stubble to collect water, Soil Conservation Service Forest Reforestation: replant as many acres as harvested. Forest Fire management
10
Conservation Types Wildlife Minimize human encroachment on wildlife habitat Endangered Species Act and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Fossil Fuels Oil Embargo in 1973 (Arab-Israeli war) limited supplies and affected prices. Solutions: better fuel economy, improved home insulation, more efficient AC, use of alternative energy sources
11
Conservation Types Mineral Diverse and large quantities available Solution: Recycling of metals and Aluminum can recycling Water Industry, Agriculture, Domestics, and Fish and Wildlife are major users of water Solution: Reduce pollution of rivers, streams, and lakes
12
Assignment Using the following Management Agencies, answer the following questions: Name of agency What natural resource(s) does the agency help? What are the jobs within that agency?
13
Management Agencies U.S. Fish and Wildlife U.S. Forest Service U.S. Bureau of Land Management U.S. Soil Conservation Service Natural Resource Conversation Service U.S. Geological Survey Oregon Department of Environmental Quality
