V. The Skull

A. Composed of 22 bones in the cranium and face B. Sutures 1. Sutures are immovable joints found between skull bones a. Coronal suture- between the frontal and parietal bones b. Sagittal suture- btw two parietal bones c. Lamboid- btw parietal and occipital d. Squamous- btw parietal and temporal bones

C. Fontanels 1. The dense connective tissue membrane filled spaces between the cranial bones of fetuses are fontanels a. AKA soft spots

D.Cranial Bones 1. Frontal bone- forms forehead and the roof of the orbits a. Fuses as you age (complete by 6) b. Protect frontal sinuses c. Ridge above the eye is what causes a black eye 2. Parietal bones- form most of sides and roof of cranial cavity a. Has many ridges and groove for blood vessels to the brain

3. Temporal bone- form inferior sides and floor of the cranium a. Houses internal and middle ear as well as the opening 4. Occipital bone- forms posterior part and base of the cranium a. Opening for spine attachment b. Tons of ligament attachment

5. Sphenoid bone- middle part of the base of the skull a. Keystone bone of the skull; all cranial bones attach to it 6. Ethmoid bone- forms anterior floor, middle of the orbits, and the nasal septum
