SCIAMACHY CO validation
2
7 April 2010 SCIAMACHY CO meeting @ SRON 2 FTS paper - In total 19 surface stations that measure CO total columns based on Fourier Transform Spectroscopy measurements. - 2003-2007 SCIAMACHY measurements are used. - Mainly Europe/Northern Hemisphere - As always, multiple observations (space-time) must be averaged to reduce the SCIAMACHY instrument-noise errors. - Some “problematic” stations (mountains, isolated islands, vicinity of nearby strong but local CO source regions, time coverage)

7 April 2010 SCIAMACHY CO meeting @ SRON 4 - Overall, On good agreement between SCIAMACHY and FTS observations for both mean values as well as seasonal variations. - NH high latitude stations absolute differences between SCIAMACHY and FTS are close to or fall within the SCIAMACHY precision of 0.1×10 18 molecules/cm 2. - NH mid-latitude stations: validation is complicated due to the vicinity of emission sources for almost all stations higher FTS columns compared to SCIAMACHY CO. - NH mountain stations: difference can be explained by altitude effect Comparisons with Northern Hemisphere mountain stations are hampered by elevation effects. When considering these effects, the validation provides satisfactory results. - SH mid/high latitude: SCIAMACHY systematically smaller than FTS for 2003 and 2004; for 2005 and later years the differences are smaller and appear statistically insignificant. - No other systematic spatial or temporal biases could be identified based on the validation presented in this paper. - Robust results w.r.t. instrument-noise error filter, sampling area, and time averaging. 7 April 2010 SCIAMACHY CO meeting @ SRON 5 - All FTS-related scientists have been made co-author Unpublished data was made available to us Creat goodwill May come in handy in the future -Received comments back, which been incorporated, hence paper is ready for submission … FTS paper: status

7 April 2010 SCIAMACHY CO meeting @ SRON 7 SCIAMACHY CO & MOZAIC -Wait for new SCIAMACHY CO dataset (Rien/Annemieke) -In the mean time, new TM5 simulation has been performed (V. Huijnen) with updates of the chemistry as well as emissions. -Simulation done for 2002-2008, can easily be extended … -Results of new simulation & new MOPITT v4 data suggest that a bias in model CO still is present (both MOPITT and TM5 increase). Appears to be a general model problem [P. van Velthoven, QUANTIFY, pers. comm.].
