1 Deciduous Forest

2 Where are deciduous forests? Deciduous forests can be found in the eastern half of North America, and the middle of Europe. There are many deciduous forests in Asia. Some of the major areas that they are in are southwest Russia, Japan, and eastern China. South America has two big areas of deciduous forests in southern Chile and Middle East coast of Paraguay. There are deciduous forests located in New Zealand, and southeastern Australia also. Deciduous forests can be found in the eastern half of North America, and the middle of Europe. 4 Abiotic Factors Average Temperature: 50°F Average Temperature: 50°F Average Rainfall: 30-60 inches/year Average Rainfall: 30-60 inches/year Types of Precipitation: Rain, snow, and sleet are all common in a deciduous forest Types of Precipitation: Rain, snow, and sleet are all common in a deciduous forest Seasons: All four seasons occur in a deciduous forest. In the fall, leaves change color and then fall from the trees by winter. Seasons: All four seasons occur in a deciduous forest. 7 Plant and Animal Adaptations The plants have adapted to the forests by leaning toward the sun. Soaking up the nutrients in the ground is also a way of adaptation. The animals adapt to the climate by hibernating in the winter and living off the land in the other three seasons. The animals have adapted to the land by trying the plants in the forest to see if they are good to eat for a good supply of food. Also the trees provide shelter for them. Animal use the trees for food and a water sources. Most of the animals are camouflaged to look like the ground. 8 Symbiotic Relationships Ticks will commonly feed off the blood of deer, making them weak and sickly-Parasitism Ticks will commonly feed off the blood of deer, making them weak and sickly-Parasitism Bees will feed of plant nectar and then spread the pollen of plants, helping them reproduce- Mutualism Bees will feed of plant nectar and then spread the pollen of plants, helping them reproduce- Mutualism

9 What can I do when I visit a deciduous forest? Camping -Deciduous trees create a pleasant place to camp. Deadwood fallen from the trees provides material to build lean-tos or wood for a campfire Camping -Deciduous trees create a pleasant place to camp. 10 Points of Interest-famous deciduous forests Appalachian Mountains -The Appalachian Mountains are one of the largest remaining temperate forest systems in the North America. This eco-system stretches from Alabama to Newfoundland, Canada. Appalachian Mountains -The Appalachian Mountains are one of the largest remaining temperate forest systems in the North America. 12 Environmental Threats Humans are responsible for all environmental threats to a deciduous forest. Humans are responsible for all environmental threats to a deciduous forest. Habitat Loss - the removal of trees/other plants for human use Habitat Loss - the removal of trees/other plants for human use Invasive Species - introducing nonnative species to the forest, where they outcompete the native species Invasive Species - introducing nonnative species to the forest, where they outcompete the native species Acid rain - from industrial and motor vehicle fumes damage tree leaves and cause plants to produce fewer seeds Acid rain - from industrial and motor vehicle fumes damage tree leaves and cause plants to produce fewer seeds

15 Deciduous Forests are SO Important! Deciduous Forests provide large amounts of oxygen to animals (and humans) due to the large number of trees they contain. All those trees remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, which helps fight climate change (global warming). The trees of the deciduous forest also help prevent erosion.
