Main idea... Central to Krashen's theory of second-language acquisition is his distinction between language and language learning.

Five hypotheses

According to Krashen, 'acquisition is a subconscious process and learning is conscious'. Learned competence and acquired competence develop in very different ways.

According to Krashen, In his view, language learning occurs through the formal study of rules, patterns, and conventions... a study which enables one to talk about and consciously apply the knowledge gained.

He offers terms for acquisition such as “implicit learning”, “informal learning” and “natural learning”.
