4 ‘Hidden help’ In 1999, sales of home help papers for Key Stage tests hit best sellers list for the first time. Maths was the biggest worry for parents. MORI poll: 47% of parents would like more practical help in order to help their child with their maths.

5 What’s going on? Illuminating ‘Hidden help’ with maths How do parents help their children? Why do they do it? What difficulties do parents experience? How can these be overcome?

6 What difficulties do they face? Russell’s research Starting point… the parents! Behind closed doors Parents were very interested in helping their children with maths Parents were encountering difficulties

7 What difficulties do they face? Results Lack of knowledge about children’s maths Unaware of assessment and reporting procedures Difficulty supporting their child if child experiencing problems Did not recognise everyday maths Their own emotions

9 How can these difficulties be overcome? The venue. Away from memories and pressure of schools Relaxed atmosphere – cake and coffee! Drip-feeding: –Positive relationship with child –Mathematical resilience –Respect for the child –Hope Relationships with the other parents grow
