EARTH'S ROTATION AND REVOLUTION
3
Earth’s Rotation Rotation is the spinning of the Earth on its axis. The time for one rotation is 24 hours. The spinning of earth on its AXIS – the imaginary line through the planet from the North Pole to the South Pole – is its rotation The axis of the earth is tilted 23.5° Click image to view Earth’s rotation.
4
Earth’s Revolution A revolution occurs as the earth moves around the sun. Time for one revolution = 365 1/4 days = 8,766 hours

6
Earth’s Orbit The path an object takes as it revolves around another object.
7
Around and Around We Go Every second, that you sit in this classroom, the Earth's orbital motion carries you about 18 miles through space.

What Causes Seasons?
12
We know that the reason we have day and night is because the Earth rotates. Rotate means to turn. The Earth rotating on its ______ gives us day and night. axis Earth’s axis is the imaginary line that goes through the center of the Earth.
13
But guess what! Rotating isn’t the only way the Earth moves in space! The Earth also revolves. Revolve – When one object moves around another object
14
It takes the Earth one year, or 365 ¼ days to orbit the sun. Does anyone know what orbit means? Orbit - The path that an object follows as it revolves around another object. How long does one revolution take?
15
All over the world, people experience the four seasons.

and fall.
20
But why do we have four seasons? It’s because the Earth’s axis is tilted. Take a good look at our globe. It‘s not tilted like that because it looks nice. No way. That’s the way the Earth is tilted in space. That tilt gives us seasons!
21
Look at this diagram. Notice how the Earth is always tilted in the same direction. As the Earth __________ the part of Earth tilted toward the sun changes. revolves
22
During part of the year the North Pole tilts towards the sun. This season is ________. summer
23
During another part of the year, the North Pole points away from the sun. This season is ______. winter
24
When it is summer in North America, we are tilted towards the rays of the hot, bright sun. Sun’s rays N S
25
When it is winter in North America, we are tilted away from the sun’s rays. N S Sun’s rays
