4  Raised by Christian parents during the British Colonial rule  Influenced greatly by the native Yoruba culture, NOT European or Christian values  Educated in both Nigeria and England **Has always believed in the need for cultural independence to go along with political independence**

5  1 st African  Nobel Prize in Literature for his commitment to African culture and to social change/ human rights

6  Much of his work deals the clash between traditional Yoruba cultural values and values based on British and other European cultures

7 Irony  Verbal Irony-Occurs when the writer, narrator, or speaker says one thing and means something entirely different  Also seen through character names Examples 1. 8  Situational Irony- Situation that occurs that is completely opposite of what was expected Examples You laugh at a person who slipped stepping on a banana peel and the next thing you know, you slipped too. You buy a brand new Prius because gas prices are SOO HIGH! But then gas prices drop.

9  Dramatic Irony- the audience knows more than the characters Examples 1. Titanic 2. Horror Films

10 Paradox  A situation or statement that seems contradictory but is actually true. Surgeon’s job- inflicting pain in order to relieve pain

Now, garners we, Awaiting rust on tassels, draw Long shadows from the dusk, wreathe Dry thatch in woodsmoke. Laden stalks Ride the germ’s decay- we await The promise of rust.
