A CONNECTED SOCIETY More and more of our lives and our children's lives are being spent online. Families used to have one computer kept in a shared space. Most new electronic devices are capable of being ‘connected’

WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT? Sadly, there are threats on the internet in the form of viruses, fraud and exploitation. Our children are potentially at risk.

THE FACTS One in three children have been the victim of cyberbullying. One in four have experienced something upsetting on a social media site One in four have seen hate or racist messages online. (Nspcc website)

IN OUR TOWN. Primary aged children HAVE been involved in incidents of grooming and online abuse.

WHAT CAN CONNECT TO THE INTERNET? Computers Tablets Phones Games consoles Smart TV These can ALL access social media etc.

WHAT DO CHILDREN DO ONLINE? Search using search engines (google/bing) Share pictures and videos – Instagram, facebook, youtube. Social media – Facebook, twitter, Messaging and chat – iMessage, bbm, snapchat, oovu, facebook, msn, whatsapp. Games – websites, consoles, ipads.

The internet can be an excellent place to learn, to share (responsibly) and be creative.

THE MINIMUM LEGAL AGE FOR CHILDREN TO HAVE THEIR OWN ACCOUNTS ON MOST SOCIAL MEDIA SITES IS 13 YEARS OLD.
