Lesson 10 – The 70 Sent Out 10:1-20 Jesus sends out 70 disciples in pairs ahead of where He was to go vv. 1-16 A “plentiful harvest” awaited them v. 2 They would live on others’ kindness vv. 4-7 They would bless the receptive & judge the unreceptive vv. 8-11

Lesson 10 – The 70 Sent Out 10:1-20 Jesus sends out 70 disciples in pairs ahead of where He was to go vv. 1-16 “Woe” upon cities that would not receive them nor their preaching vv. 12-15 The 70 were “reassured”…hearing or rejecting them = hearing, rejecting Christ Himself v. 16

Lesson 10 – The 70 Sent Out 10:1-20 They return successful vv. 17-20 “Even the demons are subject to us” Jesus saw their success as a type of “victory” over Satan vv. 18-19 Yet, they were not to be overconfident…they were to rejoice in being known in heaven v. 20

Lesson 10 – Giving Thanks 10:21-24 Jesus expressed thanks over their success He was glad re: the type of person who heard their preaching v. 21 1 Cor 2:10-15 He was grateful re: their acceptance of His identity as the Son of God v. 22

Lesson 10 – Giving Thanks 10:21-24 Jesus taught the disciples that they also needed to be thankful vv. 23-24 They were privileged to see & hear what they were witnessing Many previous servants of God had longed to know such and did not cp. 1 Pet 1:6-12

Lesson 10 – Another Parable 10:25-37 Jesus is approached by a lawyer asking, “What must I do to gain eternal life?” v. 25 His motive was to test Jesus…perhaps to trap Jesus in picking 1 command over another Jesus again emphasizes the importance of the written word v. 26

Lesson 10 – Another Parable 10:25-37 The lawyer shows an understanding as well as a misunderstanding vv. 27, 29 He understood …he correctly quoted the Law as well as “summarized” it Deut 6:5 Lev 19:18 He misunderstood …he tried to construe the application too narrowly “to justify himself”

Lesson 10 – Another Parable 10:25-37 The Good Samaritan Parable vv. 30-35 A man (most likely a Jew) travels to Jericho from Jerusalem He is robbed, beaten, left half dead Two prominent Jews (priest, Levite) come to him and pass by without helping him

Lesson 10 – Another Parable 10:25-37 The Good Samaritan Parable vv. 30-35 A Samaritan stops, not only giving help but “going the extra mile” to see to his needs The “choice of characters” in Jesus’ story was not accidental…it was to answer the lawyer’s restrictive question

Lesson 10 – Another Parable 10:25-37 Jesus asks lawyer, “Who proved to be the neighbor…?” v. 36 The lawyer answered correctly v. 37a Jesus told him, “Go do the same” v. 37b The Lesson Ù a “neighbor” is not who we are…it is who we prove to be by our actions

Lesson 10 – Visiting Bethany 10:38-42 Jesus travels to Bethany…visits in the home of Martha v. 38 Jn 11:1 He taught…Martha’s sister Mary sat at His feet, listening to Him v. 39 Martha “complained” to Jesus re: Mary not helping her with the serving v. 40

Lesson 10 – Visiting Bethany 10:38-42 Jesus “gently rebukes” Martha v. 41 She let other things “trouble” or “bother” her Jesus commends Mary v. 42 “Only 1 thing” is necessary…the “good part” It cannot be taken away from a devoted disciple who chooses it
