BELLWORK Finish up children’s book and decide whether or not you are going to present it to the class!
2
BELLWORK #5 How often do you think a woman should go to the doctor for regular check-ups during pregnancy?
3
CHAPTER 9 PRENATAL CARE
4
Prenatal care - the special care a woman and her developing baby receive during pregnancy Includes all special considerations that are important during pregnancy, such as: medical care proper nutrition exercise & weight gain avoiding health risks
5
MEDICAL CARE DURING PREGNANCY Obstetrician (OB-GYN) a doctor who specializes in pregnancy and birth Certified Nurse-Midwife a nurse practitioner with specialized training and experience in prenatal care and delivering babies
6
THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN CHOOSING A DOCTOR: experience reputation comfort level- male vs female works alone or with group fee-insurance, payment plan
7
THE FIRST MEDICAL VISIT INCLUDES: Confirming pregnancy Reviewing medical history A physical and pelvic exam Checking blood pressure and weight Health guidelines to follow
8
Answering questions Determining due date based on date of last menstrual period (LMP – 3 months) + 7 days =Due Date Discussing fees/insurance Scheduling series of checkups
9
CALCULATING THE DUE DATE Lisa : Date of LMP – Sept. 10, 2015 Due date = June 16-17, 2016 Tiffany Date of LMP – June 2, 2015 Due date = March 8-9, 2016
10
MEDICAL CHECKUPS DURING PREGNANCY once a month until month 6 twice a month during months 7 and 8 once a week during month 9 At each, check: weight, blood pressure and urine; measure uterus, examine cervix; ask/answer questions
11
PRENATAL TESTS Ultrasound uses sound waves to make a video image of an unborn baby used to view position and development of fetus can show physical disabilities, confirm due date, & reveal gender
12
Amniocentesis a needle is inserted through the abdomen into the uterus and a sample of amniotic fluid is drawn (taken out) cells in the fluid are examined for abnormalities only done if high risk for birth defect slight chance of miscarriage
13
Chorionic Villus Sampling (CVS) a tube is inserted into the mother’s cervix/vagina & used to remove a small amount of the tissue from the membrane that encases the fetus can be done earlier in pregnancy than amnio, but risk of miscarriage is higher
14
BELLWORK #6 Do you think exercise is safe for women during pregnancy? Explain what kinds of exercises you think a pregnant woman should/should not do.
15
NUTRITION DURING PREGNANCY Good nutrition is the single most important factor in prenatal development “eating for two” is a common misconception- should not eat twice as much No additional calories are needed during 1 st trimester focus on eating nutrient-dense foods
16
Add 300-400 calories per day during second and third trimesters Eat a variety of foods (food groups) to ensure you get the right amount of nutrients drink enough water & avoid caffeine monitor sodium (salt) intake can cause swelling of feet and hands & high blood pressure take prenatal vitamins daily
17
WEIGHT GAIN DURING PREGNANCY Normal weight gain: single baby - between 25 and 35 pounds twins - between 40 and 45 pounds triplets – between 50 and 60 pounds gaining too much, or not enough weight, can negatively affect the baby’s development
18
EXERCISE DURING PREGNANCY physical activity helps keep a woman’s body strong and can make delivery easier usually fine to continue most exercises started before pregnancy, but not the time to start anything new
19
walking is best/safest exercise always consult with doctor look for exercise classes/programs specifically for pregnant women yoga, water aerobics, etc…
20
ACTIVITY Read pages 208-211(green book) to get a better understanding of nutritional needs during pregnancy. After reading, take out a sheet of loose leaf - write down everything you ate and drank yesterday…
21
Switch papers with someone sitting next to you. Pretend for a minute that you are a pregnant woman… Analyze your partner’s paper to see what changes you would need to make to their diet to fit your needs (as a pregnant woman)? What would you need to take out ? What would you need to add?
22
BELLWORK #8 Review: How much weight should a woman gain during pregnancy?
23
HEALTH RISKS TO MOTHER AND BABY Includes: medications, illegal drugs, alcohol, smoking have the MOST devastating effect when reach the fetus during the first trimester of pregnancy increased risk of miscarriage, premature delivery, birth defects & infant death
24
MEDICATIONS Which include: prescriptions OTC (over-the-counter) vitamins herbal supplements * Should always check with doctor before taking any of the above
25
ILLEGAL DRUGS includes: marijuana, heroin, cocaine, hallucinogens babies born addicted suffer through withdrawals and may not survive babies may have emotional, visual, hearing problems and mental disabilities
26
ALCOHOL passes through placenta and affects baby as quickly as mother No amount has been proven to be safe avoid ALL alcohol during pregnancy
27
A strong link exists between alcohol use during pregnancy and miscarriage, stillbirth, and early infant death Also the risk of having a baby with FAS fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) physical (growth deficiency, facial disfigurement, heart defects) & mental disabilities caused by heavy drinking during pregnancy
28
INDEPENDENT ACTIVITY Imagine that one of your family members (someone you are very close to) thinks it is fine to drink occasionally. Conduct research to learn more about how even occasional drinking can affect a fetus.(cite source(s) used – must include 1) Create a one-page report explaining why any amount of alcohol is unsafe.
29
BELLWORK #9 Identify ONE thing you have heard a woman should not eat or drink during pregnancy that you suspect might NOT be true?
30
FOODS TO AVOID raw fish & shellfish (sushi, oysters) raw eggs (desserts, salad dressings, sauces) unwashed fruits & vegetables any unpasteurized food/beverage
31
SMOKING increased risk of SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome) babies of smokers develop more respiratory infections that affect them throughout their lives
32
CAFFEINE found in: coffee, tea, soft drinks, chocolate, certain medications easily passes through placenta, baby experiences same effects as mother (increased heart rate, sleeplessness) 200 mg/day is considered safe
33
200 mg 1 oz chocolate candy bar = 9 mg 8 oz iced tea = 25 mg 12 oz Coke = 35 mg Red Bull = 77 mg Starbucks coffee = 330 mg
34
X-RAYS exposure to radiation can cause congenital disabilities (birth defect) in a developing fetus always tell doctor or dentist if pregnant should not work near or operate x-ray machines during pregnancy
