Author’s Purpose The author’s purpose is the main reason for presenting a story or selection in a certain way. An author’s purpose does two things Can be to inform to inform, explain, to entertain, or to persuade Affects things in the story, such as the details, descriptions, story events, and dialogue An author can have more than on purpose for writing. To inform To explain To entertain To persuade

Vocabulary Inform – expository type of text that give information. Explain – direction on how something works or how to do something. Persuade – when you convince someone to believe in a certain way or about something. Entertain – to make someone laugh or be amused.

The Importance of understanding author’s purpose and audience Good readers are able to determine why the story was written and who it was written to Good writers know why they are writing a paper and who they are writing to.

Steps to deciding what the author’s purpose is Step 1- Read the passage. Step 2- Identify what type of writing it is. Narrative/Expository Step 3- Ask yourself why the author wrote the passage.
