1. Prejudice 1.a. An adverse judgment or opinion formed beforehand or without knowledge or examination of the facts. b. A preconceived preference or idea. 2. The act or state of holding unreasonable preconceived judgments or convictions. 3. Irrational suspicion or hatred of a particular group, race, or religion. 4. Detriment or injury caused to a person by the preconceived, unfavorable conviction of another or others.

2. Five Levels of Prejudice 1. Avoidance--is when a person or persons avoid someone because of how they look, their race, religion, etc. A person who avoids will not talk to, sit next to, or even look at someone they are prejudiced against. 2. Verbal--is when someone actually says something against another person because they are different. Ex: racial slurs. 3. Discrimination--is when someone actually does something to another person due to prejudice. 4. Violence--When prejudice turns physically aggressive. Often started by racial slurs or put downs. 5. Murder/Genocide--When prejudice causes a person or entire groups of people to be killed.

4. Verbal Define verbal prejudice Tell what you saw Tell what you heard. Example. Humor is weird. We laugh at negative things. Example How do you feel when others laugh? How do you feel when you laugh? How do you feel if the joke is about you?

5. Discrimination Tell what you saw; heard How did the people being discriminated against feel? What did you feel watching? Anything familiar? Example of discrimination at HSHS?

6. Violence What did you observe when the violence occurred? Are we so immune to violence that we laugh? How did it feel to laugh? What are you thinking and feeling right now if you laughed? If you didn’t? Example of violence in our society?

7. Murder/Genocide What did you just see? How did it make you feel? What does this have to do with every day life? What do you know about genocide today?

8. Exit Slip—pick one—2-3 sentences What have you learned about prejudice? How are the 5 levels related? What surprised you, made you angry, or made you stop and think?

11. Research For your project, you are going to choose one type of prejudice and research the consequences of prejudice. You will find three sources, read and take notes on those sources, and then compile your information for a speech/powerpoint presentation.
