In 1943, he applied for 104 different university teaching jobs, all that were black schools. Eventually he spent 10 years with Howard University, becoming known for “building a national reputation as a creative researcher and a talented teacher.” In 1960 he actively supported the free speech movement

He became the first African American to be named to the National Academy of Sciences in 1965 He won the von Neumann Theory Prize in 1979
