2.  AB in 1938  AM in 1939  Ph.D. of Statistics in 1941  All from the Univ. of Illinois-Urbana Champaign  Was a Professor of Statistics at the University of California at Berkeley

3.  In 1943, he applied for 104 different university teaching jobs, all that were black schools.  Eventually he spent 10 years with Howard University, becoming known for “building a national reputation as a creative researcher and a talented teacher.”  In 1960 he actively supported the free speech movement

4.  He became the first African American to be named to the National Academy of Sciences in 1965  He won the von Neumann Theory Prize in 1979
