Objective: I will use models to represent multiplication and division.
2
Meaning of Multiplication and Division Create a model for 3 x4 using the items on the side counter. Show me in as many ways as you can. Remember you can create your model on top of your dry erase board and add notes, labels, etc. to your model.
3
Let’s look at what I did to model 3 x4 I create an array with 3 rows and 4 columns rows columns Array- items arranged in rows and columns
5
3 x 4 rows columns
6
4 4 +4 12 I can use repeated addition to find 3 x4. Add 4 rows of 4 counters. I get the same answer as 3 x 4=12.
7
3 x 4 = 12 Factor Product

Welcome to Math Class! Materials Needed: ● Math Notebook, folder, and a pencil Warm up on your whiteboard: ● Draw an array to represent the equation 3 x 5 = 15. Be sure to defend your thinking with an explanation and labels using math language.

11
Today’s Objective I will develop an understanding of multiplication and division and how they are related.
12
15 ÷ 3 Create a model for 15 ÷ 3 using the items in your bucket. Show me in as many ways as you can. Remember you can create your model on top of your dry erase board and add notes, labels, etc. to your model.
13
I put the counters in 3 rows since the divisor is 3. 15 ÷ 3 I used 15 counters because that is my dividend or what is being divided up into equal groups.
15
So, 15 ÷ 3 = 5 dividend divisor quotient 15 ÷ 3
16
3, 6, 18 What’s the relationship? Determine the relationship between 3, 6, and 18. Using your manipulatives bucket defend your thinking by creating a model and using math language. In your defense of your thinking, you must include the words: factor, product, and array
18
What is a fact family? A set of four related multiplication and division facts that use the same three numbers. Example:
19
Latanya and her father are baking a cake. Her father asks her how many eggs they have. The eggs in the cartoon are arranged like the picture. Write as many number sentences as you can to describe the array.
20
Reflection Question Take a stand! Reyna says that multiplication and division are not related. Her friend Eli disagrees with her and says that multiplication and division are related. Who do you agree with? Be sure to defend your position with examples and math language.
