LEGISLATIVE -Lawmaking branch -Congress = Senate & House of Representatives -This branch: Collects taxes, coins money, regulates trade, declares war…

EXECUTIVE -Headed by the president to carry out the nation’s laws and policies -Commander in chief of the armed forces -Enforces the laws

JUDICIAL -Court system (Interpret Laws) -Made up of: *Federal Courts *Supreme Court (highest court)

SEPARATION OF POWERS - The Constitution DIVIDES government POWERS among the legislative, judicial and executive branches.

CHECKS AND BALANCES -The framers set up the system of checks and balances to keep any one branch of government from gaining too much POWER! -The 3 branches of government have rules that check, or limit, the others so that no single branch has too much power!
