Diffraction Practice Phys 11

Single Slit Diffraction A water wave impinges on a single opening; using the single slit diffraction equation, determine the spreading angle: The opening is much larger than a wavelength The opening is twice the wavelength The opening is equal to the wavelength The opening is half the wavelength The opening is much smaller than w.l.

Single Slit Diffraction You have two lasers, red (650nm) and green (575nm) which you direct toward a single slit apparatus. If the opening is 1.45mm, what spreading angle would you observe for each?

Double Slit Diffraction A blue laser (450nm) is directed toward a double slit apparatus. The distance between the apparatus and the screen is 4.5m, five fringes are observed and the separation of the two furthest fringes is 5.0cm. How far apart are the two slits?

Double Slit Diffraction During an experiment, you direct a red laser (650nm) toward three different double slit apparatus which is 2.0m from the screen. Determine the separation of the slits if: 5 fringes, 10.0cm across fringes 9 fringes, 7.5cm across fringes 3 fringes, 12.2cm across fringes

Path Length Difference

Path Length Difference – So What?

Practice You have a red laser (650nm) that is impingent on a double slit apparatus with a slit separation of 2.5mm. At what angles do the n=0 maxima and minima occur?

More Practice You have a double slit apparatus that shows the n=0 minima at 14°. If you are using a blue laser (450nm), what is the slit separation? You have a double slit apparatus that shows the n=0 maxima at 25°; if you are using a microwave (15cm), what is the slit separation?

Solve You hear a single tone (440Hz) in a room where the speed of sound is 343m/s. Where are the n=0 minimas located if the speakers are separated by: The wavelength Twice the wavelength Three times the wavelength Four times the wavelength
