3  A simile is used to compare two things  It uses the words “like” or “as” to make comparisons

4 I am hungry as a horse. He is sneaky as a snake. You run like a rabbit.

5  A metaphor is used to compare two things  Instead of saying something is “like” or “as”, a metaphor states that it just IS  Look for “am”, “is”, “are”, “was”, “were”

6 The girl was a fish in water. The clown was a feather floating away. The boy’s mind was a computer.

7  Giving human qualities or abilities to something that is nonhuman Human Nonhuman

8 The flowers danced in the wind. The peaceful gates welcome us. The earth choked on the pollution.

9  Look at each picture or sentence.  Decide if the sentence contains a simile, metaphor, or personification.  Choose the correct answer.
