European Environment Agency EEA contributions One contact person nominated for each pilot Report pan-European data availability (doc and xls) has been finalized ( Dania ETC/SIA) To be extended with “non-Art17” biodiversity information ( ETC/BD, Henrique GEOBON) Pan-European ecosystem mapping, assessment and methodology work in progress Progress in Virtual Library (Valerie Laporte)
2
European Environment Agency Virtual library for ecosystem assessments in Europe Terms of reference were drafted The uploading tool was developed http://biodiversity.europa.eu/ecosystem-assessments/virtual-library/resources/add/literature Testing phase involving experts from different countries, organisations and expertise is starting
3
European Environment Agency Terms of reference highlights Objective for Support the development of a knowledge base for ecosystem assessments in Europe Provide a public, long-term, and adaptive repository of fact- sheets, describing relevant and available resources (documents, experts, organisations) from expert documentation Scope MA manual for ecosystem assessment practitioners MAES Analytical Framework for the “Mapping and Assessment of Ecosystems and their Services”
4
European Environment Agency ToR - Functionalities The library will consist in the following set of tools – A collaborative tool For uploading specific information (in English) on relevant documents for ecosystem assessment in Europe (including grey literature, tools, events, websites and maps, in any language) – A searching tool to query for Documents relevant for ecosystem assessment in Europe Experts who produced these documents Organisations that produced these documents – A processing instrument for the generation of simple statistics on the documents uploaded, per country, ecosystems or themes…
5
European Environment Agency ToR - Development and users Tools are developed by EEA, in interaction with expected users The virtual library will be populated by the users (login required); the list of experts contributing to the virtual library will be visible and permanently updated The searching tool will be available to all (no login) Targeted users are scientific and policy experts involved in planning or shaping ecosystem assessments at national, subnational or European scale
6
European Environment Agency Out-reaching and further development The virtual library will be nested within BISE ecosystem assessment platform - http://biodiversity.europa.eu/ecosystem-assessments Once the library is functional and has reached a minimum load, it will be advertised to the broader scientific community, e.g. through – publication in scientific journals, e.g. new journal “Ecosystem services”, – presentations at annual meetings of scientific networks, e.g. SGA, ESP, ALTERNET, ….
7
European Environment Agency – Phase 1 (April-May 2013): Testing the uploading tool (time required, usefulness and adequacy to user’s needs) First population of the library: 100 documents – Phase 2: (June 2013): Testing the searching tool (functionalities and performances) – Meeting bringing together experts and IT developers (possibly in June 2013, back to back to MAES/BISE workshop) Testing the tools
8
European Environment Agency Examples of questions for the testing – phase 1 Is it possible to upload information for one document within feasible time? Is the information collected useful and adequate? (if not: what else is needed/what could be dropped?) Do we need to develop additional module(s) for documenting in more details any element (e.g. setting the process, scenario…)? Which statistics, to be derived from the library, could be of interest? (e.g. No. of documents per country; No. of documents per ecosystem; per issue, etc.) Which additional functionalities would be useful? (e.g. See “my contributions” to the virtual library) …
