Remember the American Revolution? We won some new land… Northwest Ordinance of 1787 Provided a plan for governing new territories and creating states –Once the territory had 5,000 MEN they could establish an elected assembly (not a state yet…) –When they had 60,000 people they could request admittance to the Union (Become a new state!) Must create a state constitution And COULD NOT HAVE SLAVERY! South no likey…Teams are starting to form…Hmmmm…

1. Oregon Country a)Adams-Onis Treaty: ended Spanish claims to Oregon and Florida and U.S. and G.B. agreed to share Oregon b)Settlers drawn by fur trade c)Oregon Trail: overland route from Missouri to Oregon > 2,000 miles, 5 months!!!! https://www.youtube.com/watch ?v=RaWej5kLuQg *Manifest Destiny & $

3. Mexico – was a colony of the Spanish, but they won independence in 1821 American settlers want this land! Rich in resources, believed Mexico doesn’t deserve this land, they are weak!) Mexico encouraged American trade and migration to strengthen the region Something the Spanish did not want…

Santa Fe Trail: trade route from Missouri to Santa Fe, NM (then Mexico) Drawn by cotton land, trade merchants from Missouri saw Mexico as a new market Mexicans buy American made goods, Americans buy horses, mules, fur, and silver.

* Background on Texas Independence 1. Mexico closes borders to Americans (b/c they oppose slavery) a) Americans IGNORE … come illegally (ironic?) b) Americans outnumber Mexicans 10:1

2.General Santa Anna = dictator of Mexico a)Orders Americans be disarmed and deported (no guns so you can’t fight us!) b)200 Texans (Americans) vs. 4,000 Mexicans fight at Alamo for Texan independence c)Mexicans win - those that surrender = shot! Hi, I’m General Santa Anna

3. Other Texans = inspired a)“Remember the Alamo”: remember the bravery and sacrifice b)They use this pride and bravery to attack Mexico again and defeat General Santa Anna….… 2 nd time’s the charm!

Texas is INDEPENDENT COUNTRY!!!!

…not for long though: Texas requests that the U.S. take them as a new state. The U.S. annexes (adds) Texas to U.S. as a slave state

This makes Mexico mad…

Mexican War (US vs. Mex.) Mexico Is crushed.

1.Causes a)Manifest destiny: belief that the US was destined to rule all of North America (Mexicoooo…). b)Southern desire to add slave states c)Mexico refuses to sell CA (nope, we need that) d)Mexico offended when US annexes TX (Mexicans refuse to acknowledge they lost Big Texas  )

A caricature of Democratic candidate Lewis Cass, suggesting that his expansionist leanings would lead the United States into war.
