3. THE CogAT is an ABILITY test…  Measures reasoning abilities, developed through in school experiences and out of school experiences  It tests a student’s potential not academic achievement.

4. Who takes the CogAT?  The CogAT is administered to all third grade students for placement in the GT math program starting the following year in 4 th grade.  The CogAT is administered to fifth grade students for placement in GT English, GT Social Studies, GT Science, and GT Mathematics.

5. The test consists of three batteries…  Verbal  Quantitative  Nonverbal Each section of the test takes about 30 minutes to complete.

What does this mean for GT placement?  This test is used as one indicator for placement in 4 th grade GT math and middle school GT classes.  Other criteria used to determine placement include the following: report card grades student classroom performance participation in CEU classes MAP test scores PARCC test scores.

GT Placement Process  CogAT Scores and Placement decisions will be mailed on February 26 th.  You will receive your child’s test scores in the mail, along with the results of our placement process. Please read the letter carefully. Be sure to mark the consent form for each eligible class and return it to the G/T Resource Teacher by March 11 th.

14. WHAT SHOULD I DO IF MY WAS NOT IDENTIFIED FOR PLACEMENT ?... First… do not panic! You may request a placement review. You must put your request in writing by March 8 th. Please understand that we must adhere to this countywide deadline in order to input the information into the computer for the middle schools.

15. What should be included in the letter of request?  An explanation of why you feel your child will be successful in this rigorous academic class. This may include the following:  Journal or stories written by the student OUTSIDE of the classroom  Experiments of models designed by your child-photos excepted  Evidence of participation in advanced-level extracurricular activities,…CTY, HCPSS Summer Institutes for Talent Development.

16. Who are the staff members that comprise the Placement Review Committee? The Review Committee is comprised of teachers, administrators, and the school counselor. We work together to review your letter and other data points. You will receive a letter in the mail by March 25th, notifying you of the Review Committee’s decision.
