A Multiple of a number is the product of that number and a nonzero whole number. 2 x 1 = 2 2 x 2 = 4 2 x 3 = 6 2, 4, 6 are multiples of 2.

There are two methods for finding LCM. 1. M ake a list 2. U se the ladder

METHOD 1 Make a list of the first few multiples of each number. The smallest number on both (all) lists is the LCM. 12 – 12, 24, 36, 48, 60 24 – 24, 48, 72, 96, 120

Method 2 THE LADDER

1 st Draw an “L” and write the numbers 2 nd Divide by a prime 3 rd Write your answer below Method 2 continued 1224 2 6122 336 12

Method 2 continued 24 2 6122 336 12 To find the LCM of 12 and 24 – Multiply all the numbers on the outside of the “L” LCM of 12 and 24 is 3 x 1 x 2 3 = 24
