Division of Power: Unitary Power is held by central authority Examples: Cuba Ecuador China Netherlands Saudi Arabia

Division of Power Confederation Only delegate a few powers to central gov’t Secure some common purpose Agree to certain limitations States retain considerable independence Examples: Iroquois Confederation European Union

Division of Power Fede ral System Power is divided between one central and several regional authorities Examples: United States Canada Brazil Australia Mexico Germany

Citizen Participation Autocratic One person has unlimited power Citizens have very limited role in gov’t Oldest, most common form Maintain power by inheritance or military power Forms: Absolute or Totalitarian Dictatorship Absolute Monarchy Examples: Hitler, Stalin, King of Saudi Arabia

Citizen Participation Oligarchic Gov’t by the few Small groups exercise control Citizen has very limited role Group gets its power from the military, wealth, social power, or religion Political opposition is usually suppressed sometimes violently Examples: Communist countries such as China

Citizen Participation Democracy Citizens share the power & civic responsibility on how they are governed (voting, etc) Majority rules but not to exclude minority rights Upholds basic human rights System of checks and balances to ensure the central power doesn’t have too much power Examples: United States

Two Forms of Democracies ParliamentaryPresidential Real executive power vested in a Cabinet composed of members of the legislature who are individually & collectively responsible to the legislature A system of gov’t in which the president is constitutionally independent of the legislature Leader is PRIME MINISTER elected by the legislature Leader is the PRESIDENT Examples: Canada Examples: United States
