©2007 Dr. Karl Squier 2 Key Aspects of School Reform Envisioning—Standards of excellence (expected results) are established for counseling programs, professional school counselors and students Planning—Comprehensive front-end plans for achieving the standards are developed and implemented Building Capacity—Those responsible for managing and delivering the counseling program are prepared through substantive and meaningful professional development Continuous Improvement—The environment is stabilized and is continually monitored and improved

©2007 Dr. Karl Squier 3 Importance of Professional Development In systemic change, everyone needs to be trained The language set has changed (new and expanded knowledge is required) The expected results (goals) have changed Roles and accountabilities have been redefined Skill requirements are based on new and emerging technologies Professional development of school counselors is a fundamental requirement for the successful implementation of comprehensive school counseling programs

©2007 Dr. Karl Squier 4 Who Needs to Be Trained Key constituencies in the school community need relevant information (counselors and other support staff, teachers, building leaders, parents, partners) Professional development and training opportunities must be delivered to meet this need Students receive their training through the counseling curriculum

©2007 Dr. Karl Squier 5 Three Types of PD Professional development focuses on three types of PD: PD related to being a professional school counselor PD related to organizational (district/school) support for implementing the counseling program PD related to personal growth PD in all three areas is required to successfully implement comprehensive school counseling programs

©2007 Dr. Karl Squier 6 TK4 Tasks In TK4, you will be asked to: Diagnose your current professional development program for school counselors and identify areas for improvement Develop a plan for providing PD opportunities on counseling to the school community Use a template to document professional development opportunities that you have developed

©2007 Dr. Karl Squier 7 TK4 Tasks, continued Develop a school counseling professional development calendar Produce accountability reports on the impact of your professional development program

©2007 Dr. Karl Squier 8 Expected Result As a result of delivering the professional development program, all counselors and other key shareholders will have the capacity to understand and/or implement a comprehensive school counseling program that contributes to student success and achieving the goals of school reform
