EUROPE: PEOPLE AND THEIR ENVIRONMENT

Essential Questions: How has physical geography affected where people have settled in Europe? Learning Target: IWBAT explain how the environment of Europe is unique. Formative Assessment(s): What are three environmental problem Europe faces?

BELLWORK What environmental problems does Europe have? (for example: drought, tornadoes, avalanches?)

FUN FACTS ABOUT FLOODS The worst flood in Europe occurred in the Netherlands in 1530. It was called St. Felix’s flood. It was named after St. Felix as it was his name day, November 5, when the flood occurred. It later came to be known as “Evil Saturday” More than 100,000 people died, with many regions simply being washed away. The image above shows one of the few towns in the flood zone to survive.

CLASSWORK In groups of 2-4, read about Managing Resources on page 331 Write and answer the following questions in your notes: 1.What is dry farming? 2.What protects the Netherlands from flooding today? 3.What causes soil erosion? 4.What is one big reason for soil erosion in Europe and how is it being fixed? 5.Why is it so important for Sweden to strictly manage their forests?

CLASSWORK In groups of 2-4, read about Human Impact on pages 332-333 Write and answer the following questions in your notes: 1.What is the “black triangle”? 2.Name three effects of acid rain. 3.How is the EU working to limit pollution from industries and vehicles? 4.How long does it take the Mediterranean to naturally clear waste? 5.What is the purpose of the Kyoto Protocol?

FUN FACTS ABOUT SWEDEN AND THEIR TRASH SHORTAGE Sweden is running out of trash! Since Sweden is all about recycling, only 4% of waste actually goes to the landfill. Sounds great, right? Wrong! Sweden actually burns all their trash to heat homes and provide electricity to hundreds of thousands of people. Solution? Import trash from Norway! Norway pays Sweden to take its excess waste, Sweden burns it for heat and electricity, and the ashes remaining from the incineration process, filled with highly polluting dioxins, are returned back to Norway and landfilled. Problem solved!

CLASSWORK In groups of 2-4, read about Future Challenges on page 334 Write and answer the following questions in your notes: 1.What is the largest intact forest in Europe? 2.How are the Europeans protecting their cities from the effects of acid rain? 3.How does Sweden power their bio-gas train? 4.How is western Europe and the U.S. helping eastern Europe modernize?

FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT What are three environmental problem Europe faces? List one natural environmental problem List two problems caused by humans
