Vocabulary COPD- A group of lung diseases that block airflow and make it difficult to breathe. Spirometry- common test used to measure how much air your lungs can hold and how fast you can blow the air out of your lungs; it can detect COPD even before you have symptoms. CT scan- special x-ray tests that produce cross-sectional images of the body using x-rays and a computer.

Background Emphysema and chronic bronchitis are the two most common conditions that contribute to COPD. Chronic bronchitis is inflammation of the lining of the bronchial tubes, which carry air to and from the air sacs (alveoli) of the lungs. It is characterized by daily cough and sputum production. Emphysema is a condition in which the air sacs (alveoli) at the end of the smallest air passages (bronchioles) of the lungs are destroyed as a result of damaging exposure.

Sub-Topics Symptoms shortness of breath wheezing chest tightness chronic cough that produces sputum blueness of lips or fingernail beds frequent respiratory infections lack of energy unintended weight loss Causes tobacco smoking being exposed to fumes from burning fuel for cooking and heating in poorly ventilated homes

Sub-Topics Tests/Diagnosis pulmonary functions test-uses spirometry to determine before symptoms appear chest x-ray CT scan arterial blood gas analysis Risk Factors Exposure to tobacco smoke -affects 25% of smokers the combination of asthma and smoking occupational exposure to dusts and chemicals 35-40 years genetics

Sub-Topics Treatment stop smoking medication lung therapies surgery volume reduction lung transplant Prevention never smoke or to stop smoking protect yourself from exposure to chemical fumes and dust

Conclusion In conclusion, COPD is a chronic inflammatory lung disease that causes obstructed airflow from the lungs. Symptoms include breathing difficulty, cough, sputum production and wheezing. It's caused by long-term exposure to irritating gases or particulate matter, most often from cigarette smoke. However, COPD can be easily treated and prevented. The best way to do this is to stop or never start smoking.
