Preliminaries Why has the Cinderella story remained so popular? List at least 3 reasons.

Objectives: The students will be able to explain how popular epics and legends reflect a culture’s values. The students will be able to define the Indian concept of dharma.

Focus Lesson: The Ramayana Direct Insruction The Ramayana Background Small Groups In small groups, silently read the brief summary of the Ramayana’s plot and identify superficial similarities between the Ramayana and Cinderella stories (e.g., nobility, beauty, wicked stepmother, heroism, female rescue quest, transformation, magic, etc.). Share notes.

Focus Lesson: The Ramayana T-chart construction Character names Dharma Read aloud: Bharata refusing the throne Small Groups Read “The Great War” scene Add characters and scenes to their charts as they identify points at which characters perform their dharma, instead of giving into temptation for personal or immediate gain.

Homework: The Ramayana Read "The Sword in the Stone" in Elements, pp. 645–647. Due tomorrow.
