3. Objectives:  The students will be able to explain how popular epics and legends reflect a culture’s values.  The students will be able to define the Indian concept of dharma.

Focus Lesson: The Ramayana  Direct Insruction  The Ramayana  Background  Small Groups  In small groups, silently read the brief summary of the Ramayana’s plot and identify superficial similarities between the Ramayana and Cinderella stories (e.g., nobility, beauty, wicked stepmother, heroism, female rescue quest, transformation, magic, etc.).  Share notes.

5. Focus Lesson: The Ramayana  T-chart construction  Character names  Dharma  Read aloud: Bharata refusing the throne  Small Groups  Read “The Great War” scene  Add characters and scenes to their charts as they identify points at which characters perform their dharma, instead of giving into temptation for personal or immediate gain.
