2. Introduction Ryan Fuderer I teach math at a private middle school in Charlotte, North Carolina. – Covenant Day School I am in my 13 th year of teaching. – 8 of those years have been in middle school. Who are you? – Name and job title.

3. Agenda Briefly go through why I use stations in my class. Show three different methods of how to use stations in the classroom that have worked for me. After each method, I’ll take 2 minutes to answer any questions. If there is time at the end, I’ll field any unanswered questions.

4. Why Stations? With the use of stations, I’ve been able to seemingly cut my class size in half. Stations provide me the ability to create a smaller teacher to student ratio and therefore a more personal teaching experience. Stations provide a self-paced learning environment for the student engaged in a station.

5. Stations: Method 1 Each folder represents a station.

6. Stations: Method 1 Students scan the QR code provided.

7. Stations: Method 1 The QR code takes the student to a video that walks them through a specific element. For these stations I used virtualnerd.com for the tutorials.

8. Stations: Method 1 Once the student completed the tutorial they complete a quiz to show mastery of the element covered in this station. I would check the quiz. If they passed they could move on to the next station.

9. Stations: Method 1 If the student did not show mastery on the quiz. They would return and re-watch the tutorial and try again. If the student still struggled to gain understanding. I would personally walk the student through the process.

10. Stations: Method 1 Benefits: 1.Students are able to learn at their own pace. 2.It’s easy to see which students need that extra help. 3.With the majority of students engaged in the tutorial, it frees me up to work personally with a student who may be struggling with a particular element.

12. Stations: Method 2 I spread tables (stations) out around my room. Each station has an iPad open to a specific app I want the student to be engaged in. – I like to use games that reinforce basic math skills. – It’s good to “lock down” the iPad so the students can not leave the app.

13. Stations: Method 2 I allow 5 – 7 minutes per station. – We have 45 minute classes. – I set my timer on my iPad to remind me to rotate the students.

14. Stations: Method 2 While half of my students are engaged in a station, I work with the other half at the front of my room.

15. Stations: Method 2 This allow me to seemingly have a smaller class size. It frees me up to give more personal attention to the students.

16. Stations: Method 2 With a seemingly smaller class size, the students are more willing to participate and share their understanding of the subject matter with the their fellow students.

17. Stations: Method 2 Benefits: 1.It creates a seemingly smaller class size. – Smaller teacher to student ratio. – Helps in identifying the struggling student. 2.The stations themselves create a chance to strengthen the important basic math skills that we have no time to do otherwise.

19. Stations: Method 3 The students were given a review packet. Each element had a corresponding QR code directing them to a video tutorial. This time I used khanacademy.org for the video tutorials.

20. Stations: Method 3 While the students are engaged with the video tutorials, called each student back to my desk for a short tutoring session. – This time, I’m the “station”.

21. Stations: Method 3 Benefits: 1.This works great for reviewing purposes. 2.Again, it allows you to have the personal, one-on-one time with the student. 3.A great way to find what a student grasps and what they may be struggling with.
