How do we punctuate dialogue? Use quotation marks to set dialogue apart from the rest of your writing. You use quotation marks only for a direct quote ▫When you are using a person’s exact words. Do not use quotation marks for an indirect quote ▫When you are rewording what someone else said ▫Examples: Pauline asked for my interpretation of the story. Pauline asked, “What is your interpretation of the story?

Which ones need quotes? I told her that I thought the poet was expressing remorse. I think the poet is expressing remorse I said. Jimmy shouted A parade will be held here tomorrow in honor of the governor! Jimmy told me that a parade will be held here tomorrow to honor the governor.

Punctuation dialogue, continued A direct quote always starts with a capital letter ▫Ms. Estrada asked, “Has anyone in the class swum in the Great Salt Lake?” When a quote is separated by an expression such as he said or she asked the second part starts with a lower case letter. ▫“What are some of the things,” asked Mrs. Perkins, “that they brought back from their trip?” Quotes are introduced with a comma that comes before the quotation marks. If a quote is separated, you set it apart from the rest of the sentence with a comma that goes inside the quotation marks.
