21 Special Considerations: Volume of Liquids Proper technique for reading the volume of a graduated cylinder: –bend down until the water level is at eye level –look for the meniscus (bubble/curve that forms) –read the bottom of the meniscus

23 Special Considerations – Volume of a Regular Solid When measuring the volume of a regular solid (square/rectangular object), the formula is: –volume = length (l) x width (w) x height (h) Units will always be CUBED, such as cm 3 or m 3. You read it as “cubic meters”.

25 Special Considerations: Volume of Irregular Solids When measuring the volume of an irregular solid, water displacement must be used. The steps are: –pour an amount of water into the graduated cylinder that will cover the object –measure this amount and label as “initial volume” –drop the irregular solid object into the graduated cylinder –measure the new amount of water in the graduated cylinder and label as “final volume” –the formula to find the volume is: volume = final volume of water – initial volume of water
