2. Drink Wise Age Well: Complex public health programme Aim: reduce alcohol related harm among people aged 50 and over in the UK. Where and Who: ADDACTION cost of £25 million. Demonstration sites in England (Devon and Sheffield), Scotland (Glasgow), Wales (Cwm Taf) and Northern Ireland (Western Trust area).

3. Research Team: SMART (University of Bedfordshire -England), Edinburgh Napier and Glasgow Caledonian Universities (Scotland), Glyndwr University (Wales) and Queen’s University Belfast (N. Ireland). Methods: Quasi-randomised control trial and qualitative research with service users their families, Drink Wise Age Wise staff and key stakeholders.

4. Baseline Survey Findings (n= 16,700)
20% reported drink related problems (AUDIT >8 ‘at risk’)
Of these 80% had never been asked about their drinking by relatives, friends,
or health staff.
25% of those at risk did not know where to go for help
In Scotland 67% of whole sample binged in last 12 months
(>6 units women and >8 units Men)
6% of those in Scotland had driven within one hour of drinking 12 months
compared with 20% the rest of the UK.
