1 Entry Task 9/11/14 Periods 1, 3 Read the quote of the day (back board); respond to it. What does it mean to you? Do you agree/disagree? Why? Additional thoughts?

2 Share your poem Share your poem with a partner next to you. Listen for: Strong connections to the character Inaccuracies (if any). Things you liked about the poem.

3 Choose one character from Ship Breaker and identify as much of the following as you can: Personality traits: Background: Physical Description: Motivation: Family: Entry Task 9/11/2014 Periods 2, 5, 6.

4 Characterization It is not just the basics (description, age, gender, obvious traits). To get to a true character analysis you have to look for what the author DOESN’T explicitly say. A round character (one that has many traits) is fully developed and requires more character analysis. A flat character (one that has one primary trait) needs to be analyzed as to the purpose they possess only one main trait.

5 Characterization Revealed through… 1) The characters ’ traits can be revealed through Dialogue. 2) The characters ’ traits can be revealed through Action (what they do, how they do it, why they do it.) 3) Can be revealed through the Reaction of others towards the character. (How other characters treat them, react towards what they do/say.) 4) The characters ’ traits can be revealed through the setting. 5) The characters ’ traits can be revealed through Commentary (what the narrator explicitly says about them). 6) The characters can be revealed through description. (Different than commentary.) What can their physical description tell you about their personality traits?

6 So… Instead of doing a straight character analysis, you are going to be using a familiar poem (“Where I’m From” by George Ella Lyon), to show your understanding of one of the characters within the novel. Your job is to put your character analysis skills to use by pretending to be that character in your poem.

7 Assignment First, establish what each stanza focuses on. To the right or left of the stanza, identify the topic(s) of the stanza. Then, write one for a character in the novel. Be sure to stay true to the character. Only include things that you know based on the novel.
